We were in Bozeman recently to do some hiking and get some R&R, accompanied by our two dogs. Our older dog, Dobre, has been there at least 10 times but not since 2019 (for our younger dog, Coco, it was her first road trip).
While hiking the Triple Tree trail in 90o heat and at mile high elevation we were about 1.25 miles in when Dobre started running down the trail. Realize, at 13 he doesn’t run much anymore but he remembered something. Around the next two curves was a creek, a very refreshing creek.
So, what does that have to do with business? Here are three things:
- We all have muscle memory and brain memory. When you’ve done something before you can do it again (remember it again). It could be a sales presentation, what you do for a client, etc.
- Know your desired outcome. Dobre wanted water, and he got it. You may want a new client or customer, a buyer for your business, a business to buy, a new referral relationship, a new employee, or something else.
- It takes effort, just like our dog running in the hot weather, to get the reward. It doesn’t just happen on its own. You have to do all the steps on the way to success.
It comes down to knowing what you want and doing all the things required to get it. When you do those things, the result is there.
