A business owner is like the quarterback of a football team (not counting the coaches). He leads the offense, which directly affects the defense (because the more the offense is on the field the less chance the opponent will score).
Like a QB, an owner needs a good team. Too much emphasis on the owner and things fall apart when he or she is gone or sick for more than a short time.
Look at the NFL. A number of starting quarterbacks are out injured or benched. Some team thrived (Charlotte, Green Bay) with backups because they had proper backup and a strong team. Others have struggled (Miami) and some don’t have a first-rate starting QB.
A solid team and depth means a better team in sports. It means the same thing in business and increases a business’ value. Ego drives some owners to think they have to be the most important employee, but it’s the opposite.
- Delegate and let people grow.
- Do less, strategize more.
- Hire people smarter than you.
The above and more is like a football team with strength across all positions and depth. You’re able to handle problems and growth challenges, thus increasing value.
