In early September, 2015 Seattle Mariner’s Nelson Cruz hit his 40th homerun, the number that won him the American League homerun championship last year (he has 43 as I write this). The winner this year will have less than 50 and maybe 45 or less.

A lot different than 15 or so years ago when all the steroid laden players were breaking records set by Ruth, Aaron, and Maris as if those records were set by little leaguers. Also note none of those modern day record setters have made it to the Hall of Fame, even though three of them are in the top 10 of all time homerun leaders.

The bottom line from the above is “When it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.” In the world of business, here are some things that sound too good to be true.

  • We have so many projects in the works we’re having our marketing people slow down. (Really, that’s the stupidest strategy I can think of.)
  • We’re going to have very high profits next (Translation, we’re not doing so well this year.)
  • Earn a lot of money working part-time from home. (How many people really make $5000 a month stuffing envelopes, a minimum wage job?)
  • Watch out when business sellers use the word “potential” or the phrase, “if the buyer just does some marketing….” (Yep, every business has potential, we just don’t know if it’s the potential to grow or the potential to collapse.)
